What this means when performing one of our works
Attribution: when performing a work from our site, you must attribute it to the author listed on the page for the play. We also ask that you link to our site as your source for the text. This can be done many ways, but the most important is that the author of the play and our site are given credit for writing the work in promotional material for your production.
Derivatives: You are not permitted to make changes to the works you perform without permission from the author.
This does not include changes in format: printing out copies of our scripts and distributing them to actors, as long as no material changes are made, is completely fine.
This applies to the content of the works, including but not limited to the title of the work, any text within the work such as lines, names of characters, and anything else that is provided as part of the script.
Some scripts may have clauses that permit changes; for example, the character information for a character named George might have a clause permitting this character's name be changed to Georgina to make the role more fitting for a female-presenting actor, and may also permit the changing of lines to modify pronouns for this character. This is an alright change to make because it has been permitted by the author in the script - if you have any questions regarding what clauses like this may allow you to do, reach out to us and we will get you in touch with the author to clarify.
If you would like to make changes to a play's text, and those changes are not expressly permitted in the script, reach out to us via the email provided on this site, and we will get you in touch with the author to discuss any changes to the text.
Commercial use: these works can be used for commercial purposes, so you are allowed to make profit off of your performances of these works.
What this means as an author publishing works on this site
By joining our team and submitting works written by you to be published on this site, you agree to those works being licensed under CC-BY-ND.
For us to license the works, we have to have the right to manage their copyright. Therefore, by submitting works you have written to be published on this site, you grant us permission to manage the copyright of the works and license them under the CC-BY-ND license.
You remain the author of the works; the works will always stay attributed under your name and you are the point of contact for any inquiries regarding what licensees may do with your work (such as making changes).
Because of this, once your works are published on our site, you cannot publish them elsewhere in ways that would interfere with the copyright license we have placed it under. This means that your work cannot then be traditionally published (by a licensing company that would then lay claim to the copyright) or self-published by you in a way that would place it under a different copyright license.
Irrevocability: this is an irrevocable license, meaning that once your works are under the license, they cannot be removed from that license. You have the right to have your works taken down (off the site) at any time, but anyone with a copy of your work accessed from before the takedown may still perform it within the rights of the license.
Other terms:
By submitting works, you agree that you are the author of these works. This means that they are original works that were entirely written by you.
If you'd like to submit works that were written by a team of authors, you must get permission from your co-authors to submit these works and provide documentation of this permission to us. All authors must be listed as authors of the work.
Adaptations are not considered for publication on this site.
Works that are plagiarized or were created in any part with generative AI will also not be considered for publication. We have a benefit-of-the-doubt policy regarding AI generation of works, meaning that we will not accuse you of using AI in the creative process unless we have proof, but we cannot publish works that we are not sure are not plagiarized or influenced by AI (we don't want to violate anyone else's copyright), meaning that if we are not able to guarantee this, your works may not be eligible for publication on this site.
